Granny Smith

Granny Smith

Granny Smith is certainly one of the most well-known apple cultivars. It was discovered in Australia in the 1860's and it is still one of the most profitable Australian exports. It is believed that it is the result of an inadvertent cross-breeding of the European Wild Apple and native apple. This somewhat unusual apple attracts the eye with its intense green color resembling the color of grass when the fruit is ripe. The fruits are fairly large with a round to conical shape. They taste predominantly sour. Granny Smith is a crispy apple with firm, succulent flesh white in color and sharp in taste. The flesh, however, grows softer as the apple ripens and it can be very refreshing when served cooled. In Croatia it is cultivated in Dalmatia, Istria and Baranja, areas which are not characteristic for apple cultivation.

Granny Smith is a late season variety which ripens from the second half of October until the beginning of November.
