Tree Shape – Spindle Apple Tree

This tree shape was created in Germany and its primary use today is in apple cultivation in intensive crop farming. It is suitable for apples grafted on rootstocks of low and moderate vigor, as in the case of our low-vigor rootstock M9 + T337. The most common set formed with this tree shape is between 3,000 and 4,000 apple trees. Apples cultivated in this manner become fertile very fast and produce abundant yields. In our orchards, the spacing between rows is 3.2 m and the spacing within a row 0.8 m. Our technology relies on a reinforcement system comprised of reinforcing bars which simultaneously carry the hail protection netting and horizontal wires which support the trees. The overall goal is to grow and maintain a 2.5 to 3 meters high tree whose strong lateral branches grow in an even spiral.

Branches of varying lengths grow on the lateral branches forming a productive tree that requires regular maintenance, always keeping in mind the balance between growth and productivity.
